"Why do some American exchange students, for example, speak to me in a way that is different than the way they speak to each other? My experiences as a Lebanese person in America and a Lebanese person in Lebanon in the company of Americans has led me to notice subtle indicators of internalized superiority: enunciated words, truncated sentences, condescending tones, the way they suddenly change their manner of speaking and disposition simply by turning to a fellow American."
