Land and People in the news

From As-Safir special dossier on the war: voluterrs and post-war development in South Lebanon.
"...without forgetting laurel oil. there has been laurel trees in Aita al Shaab since a very long time. No one used it until the Palestinian exodus of 1948. They taught the people of Aita how to make laurel oil soap. Aita is the only locality in the region where laurel grows so prolifically, and where soap is made, exclusively by women. Land and People helped us in the manufacture and the marketing and Nadine Bekdache made the design. Nizar pointed at a problem that emerged after the intervention: prices started changing, the kilo used to be sold between 10,000 and 15,000 lira (6-10$), and it rose to 30,000 or 40,000 lira. This worried me, he said, because most people around here use this soap, how will they be able to pay this price? He adds: i am against the concept of this organization. The upper class that invented for us liquid soap now wants to take from us our traditional soap. i dont want the people to be prevented from using it. I am against monopoly. That is why we worked to support another group of women without imposing any form of social relations. The group chose itself». Nizar Mourtada, from Aita, interviewed by Milia abu Jawdeh for As Safir.
